On July 4, 2005, William S. Penrose was found dead in his home in San Francisco while working on his nonfiction masterpiece, "The Island in the Bay." This tragic event has left us with a profound sense of loss, as Penrose was not only a brilliant historian but also a dear friend to many.
In the wake of this tragedy, it became evident that Penrose had left behind a treasure trove of notes, recordings, and documents that were to be used as the foundation for his magnum opus. As his close confidant and trusted colleague, I, Rafael Owens, Jr., have taken on the responsibility of compiling and editing these materials into the book that Penrose had envisioned.
"The Island in the Bay" is a captivating exploration of the history, myths, and mysteries surrounding Alcatraz Island. Drawing upon a wealth of primary sources, including the Morlin-Keller Alcatraz tapes, Penrose provides a comprehensive analysis of the island's past and present. The Morlin-Keller tapes, a set of video recordings by Benjamin Morlin and Joseph Keller, captured their exploration of the tunnels beneath the island during the 2003 Alcatraz Expedition. These tapes offer a unique perspective on the island's hidden depths and provide valuable insights into its enigmatic history.
In compiling and editing these materials, I have strived to remain true to Penrose's vision and maintain the integrity of his research. I am honored to have played a part in bringing this remarkable work to fruition, and I hope that it serves as a fitting tribute to the life and legacy of William S. Penrose.
